A Green Oasis in a Food Desert: Increasing the Accessibility of Affordable Healthy Foods in an Urban Neighborhood in Hartford, CT.

2012 - Paper describing the development of food (in)security in Frog Hollow, inner city Hartford. I read closely the growing literature concerning food security and food deserts, and developed a critical definition of the terms that best illuminated the conditions experienced by Frog Hollow residents. I turned to histories, archives and contemporary and historical maps of Hartford to document the evolution of food insecurity. The project involved carrying out participant observation with the Billings Forge farmer's market and urban gardens project and a walking survey of the neighborhood, its grocery stores and restaurants/diners. This paper won the 2012 Undergraduate Library Research Award at Central Connecticut State University.
